Spong is so passe

Byron Smith reflects on Spong’s travels to Australia, and links to an article with 12 wishy-washy theses by Spong, which Rowan Williams responds to in his own, cypher-like style.

On reading the article, I was struck by how, despite all his pretensions to be modern and 21st century, old-fashioned Spong actually is. Of his 12 theses, 10 of them could quite easily have been written before 1800, #3 could have been written by Huxley or Bertrand Russell and the only one with any contemporary ring to it was the last, with its quaint 1960s tone.

Rather than a “reformer”, Spong ends up simply asking “give me that old time [liberal] religion”.
